Research Repository hits 3 million downloads

The University Library celebrated a significant milestone last month, reaching three million downloads from the Institutional Research Repository.

Research Repository Coordinator Joanne Richards said this was a great result. “The Repository started slowly with two items accessed in Sept 2009, but has now become a significant way for Murdoch’s research output to be disseminated amongst researchers and communities around the world,” Joanne said.

“We now hold 12,132 research papers in the Repository, and these freely available papers are helping to make Murdoch University’s valuable research more discoverable and accessible.

“Researchers who choose to input their papers into the repository enjoy improved citation rates, increased opportunities for collaboration and supervision, enhanced brand awareness of the University and improved community engagement.”

The United States currently tops the list for the most downloads from the Repository. However, less developed countries including Malaysia, Brazil, Indonesia, Philippines, Iran and Thailand all appear in the top 20.

Other countries from the Asia-Pacific region are also well represented, with China appearing third, Japan fifth, and India seventh on the list.

The Murdoch Library plays a major role in helping researchers share their work with the world through the Repository and encourages all Murdoch University staff and postgraduate students to submit their publications.
